Care-of-the-Elderly

This module is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide excellent care for the older person.

Using a holistic approach, it will focus on individual needs and the standard of care given in a variety of settings.

Healthcare Training is now a requirement when applying for work as a carer/care attendant. This course is one of the recognised modules for many care organisations. This course provides a recognised qualification for healthcare workers, currently in employment and those seeking to work in this sector. It is the course most requested by employers along with the Care Skills Course and Patient Moving & Handling.

Care Skills ( 1 Course ) See Dates / Register

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to:

Recognise the personal care needs of the individual
Respond effectively to a persons individual needs, with their involvement and personal choices respected
Acquire practical skills in the area of individual personal care
Maintain a safe, healthy and hygienic environment for clients

Course Content

The course is designed to ensure learners have the skills and knowledge to recognise and respond to the needs of clients and to create and maintain a safe, healthy and hygienic environment.

1.    Identify relevant groups of people in need of health care

2.    Examine the physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual needs of a range of groups of people

3.    Identify the hygiene needs of dependent clients

4.    Discuss the prevention of pressure sores

5.    Demonstrate knowledge of the correct procedures for the cleaning and replacement of a range of patient equipment

6.    Adapt levels of assistance to the needs of particular clients.

7.   Demonstrate a range of interpersonal skills when dealing with clients to include empathy, respect, patience and effective
communication skills

8.    Exercise initiative to improve client involvement in social events, outings and occupational therapy and physiotherapy

9.    Contribute to the maintenance of safe and hygienic environments for clients to include the safe disposal of soiled linen

10. Assist clients with dressing, grooming, eating, drinking, toileting, continence promotion, mobility and where appropriate, social needs

11.    Apply client safety and security procedures to include appropriate on site client care procedures for washing, bathing, showering, positioning, moving and handling

12.    Give assistance that enhances the privacy, dignity, independence and positive self image of clients in care

13.    Give assistance to clients in the use of a range of care equipment to include sensory equipment, aids to encourage independence and mechanical aids including mobility aids, feeding aids, washing aids, elimination aids and hoists

14.    Report changes in the client's condition to the relevant Supervisor

15.    Complete client documentation where appropriate.

Patient Moving & Handling Course ( 1 Course ) See Dates / Register

Purpose

This course is designed for healthcare workers who need to be trained to safely move and handle patients under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work 2005 and Manual Handling Regulations 1993 and 2007.

Objectives: On completion of this course participants will be able to:

Understand the structure of the back and the ways in which it can become injured
Understand the principles of safe moving and handling
Be able to comply with current legal requirements in the workplace in relation to safely moving and handling patients/clients in a variety of healthcare related settings

PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR FOR THIS COURSE
(e.g. rubber soles with good grips - no sandals or flipflops etc as you will be participating in exercises)

How your back works anatomy of the musculo-skeletal system and mechanisms of injury
Risk assessment
The basic lifting techniques (animate and inanimate loads)

Pre-Course Requirements

No pre course requirements but English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language.

Occupational First Aid ( 3 Courses ) See Dates / Register

Purpose

Occupational First Aid

The Occupational 1st Aid course is aimed at those persons within an organisation with responsibility for first response, first aid treatment in the workplace.

The course modules meet all the requirements of the current Health & Safety Standards and requirements for employee training.

The course content will assist those responsible for first aid to develop a preventative approach to accidents and incidents within the workplace.

Occupational First Aid Refresher ( 3 Courses ) See Dates / Register

Purpose

Occupational First Aid Refresher

Occupational First Aid Certificates are valid for 2 years - it is essential therefore that First Aiders receive regular refresher training in order to ensure their certificate is in date.
This course will keep a current First Aid Certificate in-date.
You must attend a 1 Day refresher within 2 years and 90 days of attending your previous OFA course. There are no exceptions. If it is over 2 years and 91 days since your last OFA course, then you must attend a longer 24 Hour course (see Occupational First Aid Course Above).
You must bring your QQI / FETAC Certificate with you on the day of Course as proof.

This 1 Day Course can also count towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
